SALT CEDER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Salt Cedar is a non-native species that spreads rapidly and uses a tremendous amount of water. CRMWA and others believe that it significantly reduces the amount of water flowing into Lake Meredith. One acre of salt cedar can consume up to 3 to 7 acre-feet of water per year
In 2004, CRMWA began treating (aerially and by hand) salt cedar in the Lake Meredith watershed. As of 2024, we have treated over 37,000 acres of salt cedar. We are now in maintenance phase meaning that we are treating smaller areas each year to keep it under control after the initial aggressive treatment program.
CRMWA’s Objectives:
• To increase flow in the Canadian River and its’ tributaries within the Lake Meredith watershed
• To increase water quality in the Canadian River
• Create better habitat for the Federally listed Arkansas River Shiner
